End of the School Year Culinary and FACS Activities

Updated: Jun 28, 2021

It's the end of the school year and we focused on African American influence on American cuisine. We loved the Netflix series High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America and we made video questions to go along with the 4 episodes. We used this as a Juneteenth lesson as In the past we found it difficult to really do African American cuisine justice in class and wanted to get our information right. This show helped us understand that cultural contribution much better. The show is an excellent resource to teach the history of African American people and the foods that are ingrained in our American culture. Click the yellow box below for the video questions!

Cultural Themes for Teaching Culinary Arts and FACS

Throughout the school year, it has been very helpful for my husband and I (both teachers) to create a themed based culinary class once basic skills were taught. We created lessons that focused the class on different cultures in the nation and around the world. For instance, we taught French Cuisine and then had students create French dishes. Mexican cuisine lesson followed by making tacos al pastor was a fun one. We then made that for the food truck. One of my personal favorites is Native American Cuisine lesson followed by a three sisters salad. We like the lessons to lead us into the cooking because it keeps us and the students focused on the theme.
